Tips For Managing Your Money After Debt

Posted In:  debt reduction  other

The journey to debt free living is both long and difficult but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. After successfully eliminating your debt you can begin to enjoy the freedom of living a life without the constant fear and frustration that comes hand-in-hand with debt. Without the burden of debt you can begin working toward other financial goals that were unattainable when all of your income was tied up with debt payments. Consumers who are "used" to being in debt often do not know what to do with their money once the debt is finally eliminated from their lives. Here are a few money management tips for those who have recently eliminated debt from their lives.

  • Budget- There is nothing more important for people who struggle with managing their money than having a budget. There are many different ways to create a budget ranging from a simple schedule written with pen and paper to software that helps you track every expense. Regardless of what method you choose, you must have a budget if you want to keep your finances in order in the future.
  • Savings- The sad truth is that most people do not have enough savings regardless of their level of debt. People who have or are just recovering from debt are more likely to have no savings or strategies to save in place. To avoid going in debt in the future you must begin building a well padded savings account. Fortunately without debt looming over your head, you should have more money available now to not only save money but also live more comfortably than before.
  • Rebuild credit- Debt has a way of ruining your credit. Unless you have not only been diligent in making payments but also able to not miss one single due date you more than likely have a few dings to your credit.  If this is the case, future lenders may be hesitant to extend offers of credit. It is imperative that you begin rebuilding your credit immediately. You can do this by making sure each and every bill is paid on time- every time. If you have trouble keeping track of when payments are due, consider setting up automatic payments from your checking account to ensure your payment is received on or before the due date. This requires some organization or you run the risk of overdrawing your checking account should funds not be available. Credit cards are often the best way to build credit but only if you are disciplined enough to use them responsibly. Secured credit cards are available which require a down payment for collateral. They often help rebuild credit without the fear of running up a balance that you cannot pay off.

Once you have eliminated debt you can begin to experience life without the constant fear of debt collectors hounding you day and night. It is important to make the changes necessary to guarantee you are never in that position again if at all possible. The tips mentioned here will help you manage your money and avoid future indebtedness.

I agree with you, very few people save enough money.  Even though I'm out of debt, and have been for 15 years, I don't ever forget what it was like to be broke!  In addition to my full-time job, I took on a four month writing assignment with MasterCard's Mango Money, prepaid debit card, http://www.mangomoney.com.  Although I do spend some of what I make from this writing gig on things I want, I put at least 50% of it into savings because I feel more comfortable having an emergency fund cushion.  I have been laid off in my lifetime when I was broke, and I vowed never to be caught off-guard like that again.

My advice is to always live beneath your means and you will be much happier for it!
