We all like to go to the movies, but with the economy the way it has been and prices that seem to rise every year, going to the movies just isn't the cheap distraction it used to be. With movie tickets climbing above the ten dollar mark and concessions quickly adding up to more than double that, a night out at the movies can quickly run an entire family over a hundred dollars. Fortunately, it's possible to have an enjoyable night out at the movies without spending a week's pay, so long as you take into consideration a few key elements that can help save you money.
Attend the Matinee
While matinees don't usually qualify as a "night at the movies," taking advantage of matinee prices is a great way to get the theater experience, so long as you don't mind going earlier in the day. More often than not, matinee tickets are three or four dollars cheaper than regular tickets, and are a great way to save money if you're trying to take the whole family out to a movie. This is the perfect option for families with small children who may be too disruptive for an evening screening or may not be able to stay awake through an evening movie.
Share Concessions
More often than not, it isn't the movie tickets that cost the most when going to the movies, but the concessions. Popcorn, soda and candy can quickly run into a double-digit bill, which is why it is crucially important that you plan ahead. Instead of purchasing small, separate bags of popcorn or cups of soda for each person, buy large sizes and share. Doing so will save you literally five times as much as it would cost to buy separate items for a family of four.
While some theaters frown upon bringing your own candy into a theater, it can be a great way to save money, as theater candy is quite expensive. Many people stop at a convenience store on their way to the theater and grab a few bags of candy to take in with them, which can end up saving you over $3 per bag! So long as you don't bring any attention to yourself, you shouldn't have any issues bringing your own candy into the movie theater. You can even get the movie-style boxes at stores for just a dollar each.
Avoid Combo Packages
Everyone has seen the combo packages that are available at movie theaters for drinks, food and movies. While they may seem convenient, they usually cost more money than the items do when added up separately. Skip the combo packages when going out to the movies, and either buy large portions of concessions and share them with your family, or bring in your own candy from outside of the theater.
Try a Drive-In
Drive-ins are making a come back in recent years. Look around your community for the opportunity to take the kids out and watch the move from your car. You'll save on tickets and concession, plus you don't have to worry about the kids distracting other viewers.
