Posted In:  other

Let's face it, the job market is a disaster. Those who fail to keep up with technology could be left behind in the job search. Show your proactive side by using social media to help you find your next job and prosper during tough times.

You don't need to be a technology guru to make this work, either. If you are like most people, you already have a Facebook or Twitter account. Social networking sites let you connect with friends and family in a way that builds and maintains relationships by sharing funny pictures, giving updates about your day or even playing games. If you are unemployed, you could be using your Facebook and Twitter as a professional networking engine too. Here are a few reasons why your Facebook account might get you your next job.

Networking Opportunities

Your Facebook isn't just for playing Farmville. If you join professional occupation groups on Facebook or Twitter, you could get a wealth of information regarding available positions. Also, becoming Facebook or Twitter friends with companies that you might like to work for can put your name out there as an option, so that when they are hiring, you will be a consideration. Just like off-line, the more people you know within professional circles online, the more you will find that opportunities will land in your lap.

Just interacting helpfully on pages like this lets you show off your knowledge and skillset. Mixing it up with the right people can mean your name turns up the next time the business has an opening in your specialty.

Friends and Family to the Rescue

While you might be tempted to keep your job searching information off your Facebook wall, posting about looking for employment could actually work out to your benefit. If your friends and family are aware that you are looking for a job in a specific field, they can put your name out to other people that they know might be hiring. After all, if you are looking for a tech job and your uncle knows a guy that runs an IT department, your uncle might be more likely to mention your name to his friend, if he knows you are looking for work.

Use Your Profile to Get Noticed

Creating a professional profile that highlights your past experience, education and strengths is one way you can use the world's obsession with social networking to advance your career. As more and more businesses become social media savvy, many are searching sites like Facebook and LinkedIn for candidates that meet their qualifications. If you are searching for a job, or just looking for options to your current employment situation, treat your social media profiles like a resume to attract attention.

Earn an Expert Reputation

Social media engines like Twitter are especially good for building a following of like minded readers. If you are currently out of work, why not focus your Twitter and Facebook feeds on offering tips and hints about your industry to show that you are knowledgeable and professional in your chosen field? If you garner a reputation for being an expert in a specific area, there are sure to be offers from employers that wish to utilize your skills.

Technology has completely saturated our society. The cleverest job seekers will take any opportunity to get the job they want, even utilizing a medium that most people see simply as a way to stay in touch with family and friends. Social media is changing how the world does business. If you have the drive and initiative, you can take advantage of that to change your life.
