How To Find Affordable Pet Insurance

Posted In:  insurance

Pet health insurance is becoming increasing popular with animal lovers who want to provide the best possible care for their pets. Responsible pet ownersunderstand their pets rely on human caregivers for survival. Pet parents must provide food, water and shelter for their animals as well as routine or preventative veterinary care. These costs are usually considered before an animal is brought home, however many people fail to plan for unexpected veterinary costs which can quickly become expensive should your pet require emergency treatment.

Without pet health insurance to off-set these expenses, many people are forced to make the unthinkable choice to have their pet put to sleep because they cannot afford life saving procedures. Pet health insurance will not only save you money but provide the peace of mind that you have done everything possible to safeguard your pets future health.

Like most other insurance policies, health insurance for your pet varies depending on the policy and provider. Here are a few tips to consider when purchasing pet health insurance.

  • Do your research- If you are not familiar with pet health insurance, do a little research before you begin pricing policies. The best policy for your family is one that is selected with your pet in mind. Remember the cheapest policy is not necessarily the most affordable.
  • Talk to your veterinarian- The best person to ask about pet health insurance is your veterinarian. Your vet can offer advice or recommendations on what type of insurance you should consider based on their knowledge of your pet's medical history.
  • Pre-existing conditions- Finding a health insurance policy that covers pre-existing conditions is something pets and people alike find challenging. As a general rule, most insurance policies will not cover conditions that are pre-existing. The exception to this rule are companies that do not re-set their policy each year. In this situation a pet that is treated for a condition this year, might qualify for insurance next year.
  • Shop around- Review several policies before making your final decision. Look beyond the cost of the premium and consider what coverage is provided, as well as exclusions. Understand how much you will have to pay out-of-pocket before coverage kicks in, how you will be reimbursed and what (if any) limits apply.

If you do your homework and resist the urge to act impulsively, you can find health insurance for you pet that won't break the bank. Affordable premiums make it possible for pet owners to invest a few dollars today that might save them hundreds if not thousands of dollars down the road. More importantly, the life of a beloved pet might one day be saved because the owner had the foresight to purchase pet health insurance.
