I was reading this article on when "Cash for Refrigerators" starts in various states. The article's been around for a few months but some states still haven't depleted their funds for this program. Arkansas for example still has some funding available.
If you're in the market for a new appliance, look into this. It could save you between $50 and $250 on a new Energy Star appliance. If your state is no longer eligible, the link will tell you that.
Here's the links to the states
If it's as popular as "Cash for Clunkers," money could run out fast. So if you want to participate, start now by finding out what the deal is in your state.
Programs in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kansas, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and Wisconsin are already in progress.
All the rest begin over the next couple of months, according to a Department of Energy (DOE)-sponsored website. Look for these start dates:
- February: Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, New York, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands
- March: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, American Samoa, Northern Marianas Islands
- April: Alabama, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Guam
Check the links above for your state's info before you head to the store. Each state has different rules, such as which appliances are eligible, whether you have to recycle your old appliance or prove that it was hauled away, and how long the program lasts.

I won't be spending anything even with the discounts now that we've been having record highs in temperature. I'm scared to imagine what my electricity bill's going to be. We couldn't be without the AC though.
Cookie, why do you think it could be on the way out? That's a bummer. Are you sure your freezer doesn't just need a good clean round the back? It's amazing the difference that makes if you do the coils. Mine was humming really loud until I did that.
Savannah I was nosy and looked there at Arkansas. They've upped the rebate you get AND extended the program. If you claimed already, you'll get another check for the difference too!
Everybody, check your state again and see what's changed if you're toying with buying.
ATTENTION! As of June 23, 2010 the Arkansas Energy Office has increased the rebate amounts for qualifying ENERGY STAR®-rated appliances as follows: refrigerators from $125 to $275; clothes washers from $175 to $225; and water heaters from $200 to $300.
If you have already received a rebate through the program, you will automatically receive a check for the difference between the item's original rebate value and the new increased value. (You will not need to call us or send any documentation to receive the additional amount.)
Arkansas residents who replace an existing appliance with a new ENERGY STAR® appliance purchased on or after March 15, 2010, are eligible to apply for the rebate. Approved applicants will receive a check via mail. ACT NOW! Rebates are not guaranteed and are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. This program ends as soon as funds are exhausted.
And in the sidebar it notes:
IMPORTANT NOTICE (07/09/2010)
Due to the success of the Arkansas ENERGY STAR® Appliance Rebate Program, the Arkansas Energy Office has made another $1.4 million available for rebates to meet consumer demand. Rebates for eligible appliances will continue to be paid on a first-come, first-served basis and are not guaranteed, so don't wait to apply - submit your form today.

Or move to Arkansas for a while and buy it there LOL. Thank goodness I have nothing that's desperately needing replaced at the moment...

Thanks for the information, Savannah! I'm thinking my chest freezer could be on its last legs. I hate the thought of how much it would be to replace that. I can't really do without it though if I want to be able to stock up on the bargains. This would soften the blow a little.
