I find as it gets hotter the bread goes moldy much faster. Any tips on slowing that down? I throw out bucketloads in the summer.

My mom always kept hers in the fridge though I never have. She's adamant it makes the loaf stay fresh for a longer time. I prefer my bread at room temperature and to feed the birds when the loaf is past its best.

Do you find you're always halfway through a loaf when it goes moldy? If there's space in your freezer, split a loaf into two halves and freeze one half of it. Smaller portions means you have to throw it out less and bread defrosts in no time.

I keep mine in the spare room, not the kitchen, when it's hot. That's the coolest room in the house during summer. A few degrees difference gives you another extra few days out of the loaf. Put it in a cupboard too.

Savannah, I did that before and noticed the inside of the loaf wrapper gets all condensation so changed my mind. I guess that wouldn't have mattered then? I was thinking that would make it go rotten faster.

Thanks ladies! :)

This is a no-brainer. Look at the loaves instore and get one dated as far in advance as possible. The different colored wire ties on the bread are a hint. They tell the staff what day of the week the bread was made. I read that somewhere and never looked for that before. It's true, you'll see some are yellow, red, blue and so on. The further ahead the date, the longer it will last you at home. I used to grab the closest one before I heard this. Now I look. It's the same with hot dogs and hamburger buns, etc.

When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a rose with the other.

It's strange how you can look at something all the time and not see what's right in front of you. I read your post last night and saw the different colored ties today. I told a woman next to me about it too LOL. Thanks! :)

Ever thought about making homemade bread, Kay? I've heard that lasts longer than storebought. That could be time consuming though and I'm not sure how you would store that. Maybe someone else can help you out on that side. We go through bread so fast it doesn't get the chance to get furry.

I have always put my bread in the freezer, and have never had a problem with its freshness. In fact, i stock up on quality breads when they are on sale and store them in my deep freezer.
Just be careful not to let them get squished!

I tried freezing bread and thought it worked great too. My husband claims there's a different taste between bread that's been frozen then defrosted and bread that hasn't. I can't taste anything different myself. Funny how he can only taste it if he's seen me taking a loaf out the freezer LOL.

Refridgerate it

The best way to prolong the life of your bread is to put it in the fridge. I stock up on bread when it's on sale, then put it in the freezer, then keep it in the fridge. It tastes fine to us. I prefer room temp bread, but if we can't eat it fast enough then I don't want to waste it.

My mom would agree with you, GeeZee. :) Welcome to savingtools.com.

Kay, I don't know about the condensation, sorry. Perhaps someone else can answer that that does it that way. My mom's on vacation or I'd ask her.

I hate wasting anything and will buy extra then forget to use it up fast enough. The birds like it when I do that.. ;) Does anyone have ideas on how to use it up quick apart from just sandwiches?

French toast! I had that for lunch today and forgot how good it is.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. At the moment it's in my spare bedroom. Hubby didn't want it in the fridge because he's convinced it will mold faster.
