You can click on each state within this illustration of states with the highest insurance rates and it shows you what type of insurance yours is a "pain state" for or a "tame state". Mine shows pain for both car insurance and home!

It's not easy to measure the impact of geography on insurance rates, but Brian Sullivan, editor of California-based Risk Information Inc., gives it a good try. In his Property Insurance Report and Auto Insurance Report newsletters, Sullivan divides the latest statistics (2008) on average expenditures from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, or NAIC, by 2008 state median family income figures from the U.S. Census Bureau to arrive at measures of "insurance pain" by state. For our illustrations, states in the upper half of Sullivan's national pain indexes rank as "pain states" and those in the lower half as "tame states."

I hate paying insurance. I know though I'd rather do that every month than be without it just in case. It works out as a pittance really compared to having to repair/replace your car without it or God forbid if your house burned down.

It's certainly not something I pay with a smile on my face either, Splash, but is a necessary evil.

I went through a period when I had no home insurance because I just couldn't afford it. It was renewal time so I waited. It was only three months and was not worth the stress! I was terrified we'd have a fire or burst pipes or some such disaster. Luckily we didn't.
