Believe it or not, the retailer Giant Food started doing so last Friday and will run the program until March 21. What a gift for anyone in their area! They'll be handing out common generics like "amoxicillin, penicillin and ciprofloxacin." It'll also be available through Giant's sister chain, Stop & Shop.

I don't know if Walmart could implement something like that when you think on the massive reach they have. Probably 95% of Americans have a Walmart within traveling distance and would go there to take advantage of it. It would cost WalMart an astronomical amount of money. But, I wouldn't put it past them to reduce the $4 prescriptions in stores around the Giant Food locations.

I think that's a smart way to do business there. Giant Foods will get brownie points for offering that and it's got to increase their storewide sales. The more shoppers they can get to come through a Giant Food's doors, the higher the odds they'll purchase more items while in-store. That's clever on both fronts.

It would make me shop there if only to support them for supporting the average family. I hope they do make money out of it because they're doing something rather than nothing which is more than can be said about other chains.

Wow, I didn't think any retailer would ever beat Walmart's $4 generic deal. Think they'll do the same or something similar? I don't have a Giant Food store near me but I'd be right there if I did. I found a Giant Food store locator in case any of you want to see how far one is from you.

cookiefan, thanks for adding that. I read a tip here on savingtools that there's more retailers than Wal-mart doing the $4 deal.My Wal-mart's about 20 minutes away. I'll be checking the telephone directory to see if any of the other stores are closer.
