In honor of the recently passed July 4 Independence Day holiday, the topic of financial independence seems timely.  Like the holiday, financial independence means many different things to many different people.  I'll share my definition. Then, you please share your own.
To me, financial independence means the ability to make any decision without regard to its monetary consequences.  As such, financial independence means I could quit my job, sell my house, or get angry with any non-spousal relative without jeopardizing my lifestyle.

...knowing that I have acquired enough assets in order to be able to pay for all future expenses for my family...forever.

....never having to think twice if I see something I want and being able to just buy it regardless of the price.
