Tough budget times are forcing state governments to rethink the tax breaks they grant.
Michigan last week eliminated several tax credits, including those for small donations made to universities, food banks, museums and public television. The state also capped at $25 million a year the tax incentives it gives the film industry, which has been lured to the state since 2008 by some of the more generous incentives in the nation. The changes were part of a tax overhaul that Republican Gov. Rick Snyder says will spur job growth.

Gee, that's nice of them to take away a reason for food banks to get donations.

I don't buy the "create more jobs" line at all.  All those times that tax incentives drew the film industry there jobs and money would have been coming into the local economy. They would need caterers, extras (who get paid and spend locally), places to stay for all of those involved in the production etc etc.

As usual, those with power attack those without it. They are taking food out of the mouths of impoverished kids there. Shame on them.

I agree with you, Jewel. It's decisions like that that suck the lifeblood out of communities. They look good on paper but the reality is much more far reaching for local small businesses that benefit from their spending.

And don't forget that the any intelligent CEO will go do business wherever their company can get the best tax breaks. If there's no incentive, they will move on to where there is.
