We all need to give ourselves a little care and attention the odd day or two but it's not always cheap to pamper yourself. How about sharing some budget beauty ideas? I'm not the type to spend forty bucks on a cream but I still like to look presentable. Let's hear what you've got up your sleeve! :)

Try some chilled cucumber slices on your eyes straight from the fridge. That's so soothing when they feel all dry and gritty. It's good for the day after a big night out too. Lay on the sofa with them on your closed lids for about fifteen minutes.

That makes me relaxed just thinking about it. You can also whiz some peeled cucumber up in a blender with honesy and mashed banana and use that as a face pack at the same time. Try not to snack on it all while it's doing the work! LOL

You know what I find best of all? Sleep! I look like death warmed up when I don't get enough and am as grumpy as a bear. When I don't have a lot of time the fastest thing for me is to pluck my eyebrows. Giving them shape lifts my whole face and doesn't cost a thing.

I use Vaseline when my hands and lips get badly chapped but I don't buy the name brand. Dollar General has one that's only a dollar for a 13 oz jar and it's in the baby section. It's called Soft & Precious Nursery Jelly and looks, smells and does the same thing as Vaseline. Compare the active ingredients with the Vaseline brand name. They're both white petroleum jelly and you'll pay over $4 for the Vaseline name.

I keep my nails short now because it saves me the cost of a manicure. I used to spend far too much on nail treatments because mine break easily. I'd get the works including false ones. It was frivolous and a waste but I did it anyway. A nailbrush works out far cheaper.

I just thought about this. I like to grab freebies whenever I can. Watch the magazines or tv for launches of a new product then check their website to see if they give out samples or are running any competitions to win something. That's still free if you do! :)

When I'm in a hotel I take full advantage of the mini soaps and shampoos they put in your room. As far as I'm concerned, they're included in the price I paid which makes them MINE!!

LOL I suppose you save them money by not taking half a dozen baths to use up the free bubble bath. ;) You know those hairsprays you get that aren't aerosols? When you finish one of those pump action kinds, keep the bottle and when you get a new bottle, decant half of it into the old one. Top them both up with water and you've got two for the price of one. The half strength's as good as the full strength for hold.

Re: Budget beauty tips

I saw something like this on the news. It gave some basic tips, some of which have already been mentioned in this fourm.

  • Style hair "wavy", you won't have to go to the salon as much
  • Try going back to your natural hair color, or something close to it, to avoid costly touchups.
  • Get your nails cut short and use clean polish to lessen your nail salon visits.

Thanks Carly. :) I was thinking about letting my gray hair come in. I'm still in the early stages (less than 10%) which makes it look like highlights at the moment but that won't last. I'm past worrying about it much. How do women make the transition from their hair color to gray smoothly?

That's a good question. So good that I had to go find out LOL. Lowlights is one suggestion.

My hair is something I do spend money on and don't feel bad about it (much). It makes me feel good about myself when it looks good. I do love getting something for nothing that helps me keep it in good condition though.

I had to laugh at a quote I read the other day. "If the world around you is going mad and all are losing their heads, yet you can remain calm and collected, it probably means your hair looks good. " Guilty as charged. :)

LOL, that wouldn't be me. Mine has a mind of its own and has always been like that. When my hair looks good, it means some professional has styled it. I just wash and go most of the time. :)

I like the gray tips, thank you!

A good cry probably sounds a weird beauty tip. It's as good for you as a big laugh because it relaxes all the muscles in your face, gets rid of tension and releases endorphins, the "feel good" hormone. Sit yourself down with a sappy movie and bawl your way to beautiful. :)

You could exercise and get the same effect. You choose. :)

I cry when I think I'm going to get made to exercise. Does that count? ;)

I recently cut my hair much shorter for 2 reasons: 1) I use less hair products and 2) Summer is too HOT. :)

LOL, I would too Jewel.

Frazzledmom, I always feel better after a good cry. Beaches and The NoteBook in back to back showings would destress me for a month!

GeeZee I was thinking the very same thing this morning. 4am and I couldn't sleep because there wasn't a breath of air and my hair was bugging me. Even tied back it felt too hot. I may take the plunge too.

Re: Budget beauty tips

One budget beauty tip would be to save money by covering up instead of slathering yourself in expensive sun block head to toe. Wearing lightweight shirts and trousers the odd day gives your skin a break too.

Grab some scented candles at the dollar store and a bottle of bubble bath then retire to the tub for an hour. Every time I do this I fall asleep in the candlelight. Wait until the kids are in bed or at school to do this so no-one's banging on the door or if you can't get that time to yourself, lock it. That hour is so refreshing!
