We have compiled a checklist, in consultation with Deena Katz, an associate professor of personal financial planning at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, of things to do and consider over a five-year timeline before this crucial date.

That's good to have on hand, purplerain. :) I really like having access to information like this that gives solid steps to take year by year on the countdown to retirement. Thank you.

It's hard enough for my brain to wrap itself around a retirement plan, never mind a pre-retirement plan too! But it makes sense to take that idea on board. Thanks purplerain. :)

I know what you're saying, pennywise. Unfortunately we can't stop the march of time. I feel it's better to face up to it and go into retirement with our eyes wide open than denying it's going to arrive sooner rather than later.

I good plan for retirement seems to be nothing more than delayed gratification. As in, "I will not spend the money today. However I will be spending it in the future along with the growth that it generates over time."
Denying ourselves "something" today so as to put aside a small amount for tomorrow appears to be something that our fellow citizens have not come to grasp with yet.

I agree, micharch. For example I'm yet to replace my old fashioned TV and I'm not going to do so until it dies. My brother laughs at it because he's got a fancy flatscreen HDTV and my big chunky set's taking up half the living room. Do I care? Nope. Because he spends as fast as he can make it. I'll get the last laugh. :)
