2. Remember to account for leftovers when planning your meals. Many families enjoy having a leftovers night where everything is pulled out of the fridge, reheated and family members serve themselves.

This is my favorite tip. I used to have a leftovers night and have got out of the habit in the last year. I seriously need to organize myself for that again. It also gives you a night off from cooking when all you do is zap it in the microwave. :)

We did that tonight Savannah, mostly because there wasn't a bit of space in there to put anything! I put my foot down and now have a nice clear shelf thanks to all the leftovers we ate. It's as if they are invisible until I make a point of telling the family to use them up. I think I'm the only one that does it automatically.

I know! I always grab leftovers first when I'm having lunch, mainly because it's fast as well as saving me money. If I warm them all up and set them down on the table, they'll eat them. If I don't, they stay there until I need to throw them out. It's maddening.

Mine do that too. If I had the space in my kitchen, I'd have two fridges and the one with all the stuff I wanted eaten first would be open and the other one padlocked! I'm only half joking. :)

That double fridge idea is a good one, pennywise! Shame you can't get a double door one and just lock one side.

More ideas here. This is one I do have to do. I often find I've pushed stuff to the back of the fridge and forgot about it.

1. Do a weekly check on the contents of your fridge. When you forget what’s in the fridge, the leftovers from last night’s party or the fresh squash from last weekend’s farmers market trip get forgotten and as time passes, inedible. By keeping tabs on your fridge stuff, you can move things nearing the expiration date towards the front and make a mental note to use up certain ingredients for your next home-cooked meal.

I am guilty of doing that. The fridge gets so crammed stuff gets pushed to the back and forgotten about. Just today I threw out Swiss cheese and you know that's not cheap. It was in a veggie drawer and forgotten. I was really annoyed at myself about that.

The only reason a great many American families don't own an elephant is that they have never been offered an elephant for a dollar down and easy weekly payments. - Mad Magazine.

Do you know what's the worst? When the cheap stuff hides the expensive stuff and it's the expensive stuff that goes bad. I keep tortilla wraps in my fridge and I don't know how many times I've asked my family to put them UNDER smaller things, not on top of them like a blanket.

When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a rose with the other.
