How much water is wasted from a leaky faucet?

Check your faucets at home for drips. How much water can a drip waste? Well, a single drip doesn't waste much. But if several faucets in your home are dripping all day long, it can add up.

A study by the U.S. government shows, after measuring a number of kitchen and bathroom sink faucets, the volume to be between 1/5th to 1/3rd of a milliliter (mL). Drips from bathtubs are a big higher, though, at about 1/2 mL. So, for the calculator below, 1/4 mL is used as the average figure. By these drip estimates:

  • One gallon equals 15,140 drips
  • One liter equals 4,000 drips
